We have introduced our classroom friend ECHO. Echo is an owl puppet that reminds the children to repeat after the teacher. We use Echo when we introduce new sounds and when we practice the sounds with sound cards.

Check out starfall for some fun reading games and stories.

1st Grade Curriculum
The first grade team has been working on developing parent friendly curriculum materials. Follow the link below to see what your child is learning.
Our school has a subscription to Reading A-Z. We will be reading books from this website
throughout the year. They do offer some sample books, worksheets, and poetry.
WORKING WITH WORDS
In the first grade this year your child will be using the Wilson reading program . This program is a scientifically researched- based program. It is systematic and routine. The children will love telling you about Echo and Baby Echo. In first grade, we are building on the foundation set in Kindergarten. The children are using the same sound letter relationships and building those simple words into more complex and compound words. We also continue to use the same cues with Echo and Baby Echo.
Wilson Fundations
Handwriting
We are continuing with the Handwriting Without Tears writing program. This program will be practiced daily and handwriting will become a routine. We will be working on proper posture, grip and paper placement as well as use of size and spacing. Watch your child's progress and start to congratulate their efforts. Please check out the program below. Also, there is some practice paper that you can print off for the children to show you what they have learned at school.

MATH
We are proud to announce that we are using the Everyday Math Third Edition program. You will be receiving information about this program periodically throughout the year. Feel free to visit the EDM web site.Parent Connection Your child will be assigned daily homework through this program. We will be sending home UNIT letters to parents ( see below if you would like to print them off ahead of time and set them up in a math binder). Please keep these letters in a binder, so that you can refer to them when helping with homework assignments. Along with the unit letters, your child will be bringing home a HOME REFERENCE TEXT. The text is also online and interactive. Interactive Text You will be getting a login and password the first week of school. Here you will also find resources that will explain some of our ALTERNATIVE ALGORITHUMS. The EDM program creates a meaningful, long- lasting learning spiral for children.

Community Time
Each Friday the entire first grade comes together to share learning in Community Time. We meet as a grade in one classroom. This is a time when we expand upon the learning we are doing altogether. In the past, we have used this time to teach social skills, audience behavior, fire safety, artist appreciation, and much more. We integrate different learning styles throughout this time. The children have experienced presentations by guest speakers such as a local fireman, reptile specialists, and the school guidance counselor.

Fremont Fire Department visits the first grade and preschool for Fire Safety Month.

BE RESPECTFUL BE RESPONSIBLE
BE PREPARED
We will be getting together weekly with all the first grade classes to teach about a learner's job at school. The whole school has adopted these three words and their meanings to create a place where everyone can have fun and be safe. We will show your child what it looks like to be:
respectful in the halls prepared for gym responsible for returning homework
By teaching the children what we expect, they are not confused by different sets of rules for different activities. We are being proactive by preparing them instead of reactive by reprimanding them.
