We have started a study group with a grant from Tufts.  The teachers have been studying Readers Workshop and the most important information I want to share with you so far is this: GOOD READERS READ.  Take some spare time during the day and ask your young reader to read.  If you wish you may also ask them to record what they have read using Just right book report or help them to organized their thoughts by using this graphic organizer story map to sequence events from the story.

                            respect                    responsible

                                              be prepared

We will be getting together weekly with all the first grade classes and teaching what their job is at school.  The whole school has adopted these three words and their meanings to create a place where everyone can have fun and be safe.  We will show your child what it looks like to be prepared for gym: sneakers, gone to the bathroom, ready to play.

Or responsible for your work:  Eyes on your own paper, best effort or respectful in the halls: Walking on the right, hands by your sides, listening for adult directions.

By teaching the children what we expect, they are not confused by different sets of rules for different  activities.
