An idea to promote social language skills at home…

The once commonplace sit-down family dinner seems to be more and more foreign with today’s increasingly busy families.  Family dinners provide a valuable opportunity to develop social language skills.  Through dinner conversation, family members touch upon numerous language skills such as: initiating conversations, eye contact, turn-taking, adding comments or asking questions pertaining to the topic, shifting topics, and ending conversations.  Children are given an occasion to be active listeners by nodding their head, facing the speaker, making proper eye contact, and say “um hmm.”  Adults and older children serve as models for their younger family members especially by demonstrating appropriate times to interrupt and by introducing new vocabulary words.  Such skills will stay with a child and help them as they continue on in their education, interview for jobs, develop friendships, etc.  For more specific tips please visit our Speech and Language webpage under Programs!
