Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment
Teachers within the district work on curriculum, instruction, and assessment under a Professional Learning Community model, where they collaborate to enhance student learning.
Curriculum is what students must know and be able to do. Here at Ellis we have created grade level benchmarks. You can find a definition of Curriculum Mapping here.
Instruction is the how teachers are going to teach the essential content and skills.
Assessment is the how we know what students are able to do and know. The Assessment Calendar is available here.
The Ellis School is committed to the Response to Intervention model. If a student has not mastered a skill they may be placed in a similar learning gaps group and an instructor will reteach the curriculum concepts. There may be a case where significant learning gaps require intensive instruction. If a students have mastered the curriculum, they will receive enrichment.
The district curriculum plan is to continue to evaluate and refine the curriculum to align it to the Common Core State Standards, Grade Span expectations, and national standards for contant area to prepare our students to achieve competency in 21st Century Skills.
We will achieve this by
- Diary Mapping our curriculum to assess what is being taught
- Integrate science, social studies into literacy instruction through the Treasures Program and district created material.
- Systematically review curriculum to insure alignment.
The school district has four curriculum committees the Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and the Unified Arts.
The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (Smarter Balanced) is a state-led consortium working to develop next-generation assessments that accurately measure student progress toward college- and career-readiness. Smarter Balanced is one of two multistate consortia awarded funding from the U.S. Department of Education in 2010 to develop an assessment system aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) by the 2014-15 school year.
